What made me happy this week:

1. Seeing my daughter dressed up in crazy stuff to celebrate spirit week.

3. Preparing goodies bags - embellished with orange ribbons - to give to the winning team.

4. Watching my daughter have a great time with her friends.

The birthday gang

5. Wishing her a fabulous 15th Birthday.

Oh my word "Creepy" - Wednesday, October 24

LIL-oh-my-word-WED

There are lots of memories inside our minds - sometimes we just need a little nudge to coax them out.

What are the first things that come to mind when you READ this:

Creepy
My List:

1. That font (used to write creepy) is creepy!

2. Being home alone late at night - the mind can really play tricks on you!

3. When Kevin and I lived in Washington we lived on 2.5 acres at the end of a really long private dirt road. It was creepy to be home alone during the day when random cars would drive up to our house and then awkwardly have to back down our big hill.

4. Someone staring at you can be creepy.

5. When I was in grade school, there was a house in our neighborhood with a boarded up door and  "Do not enter" signs posted on the outside. The windows had been broken out, the roof looked like it was falling in, and the yard was filled with weeds. It was the "haunted house" of our neighborhood. Kids would tell stories about what happened there.

Mosaic Moments Scrapbooking - Half Sized Photos

Pike Street1 wb

When I have way more photos than I know I can fit in on my 12x12 page I frequently opt to print them "half-sheet" size. (2 images on one 4x6 sheet.) I wind up with a bunch of photos that fit nicely on a 2x3 square Paper Tile. Printing this size of image allowed me to get A LOT of photos on the two page spread shown below. (only one of the photos was printed on a full 4x6 sheet):
.

Challenge: Create a 12x12 Mosaic Moments Page using 15 or more photos by printing smaller sized images. Post your pages on Journella.com or your blog.

Childhood Memories, Music - Sunday October 21

Update-LIL-SUN

Music Memories

Things I remember about music as a kid:

1. My mother had some record albums that had Japanese images on them. I was curious and played them once - I expected to hear Japanese but the music was opera style. (I believe it was the music for the opera Madama Butterfly.)

2. I remember my brother had an 8 track player in his truck. I listened to "American Pie" over and over while I sat waiting for him.

3. My sister, Joann, played guitar and taught us to sing. Our favorite sing-a-long songs were: Blowing in the Wind, One Tin Soldier, Country Roads, Puff the Magic Dragon, Where have all the Flowers Gone, and anything from the Sound of Music.

4. When I was in 3rd grade I heard the Portland Symphony play (live) for the first time. I have loved to listen to classical music ever since.

5. My sister, Karen, liked to listen to Jim Neighbors sing. She even had an album (or may be it belonged to my mom) I thought she was crazy - he was old and he was Gomer Pile!

6. The first single record I remember buying was "Come Sail Away" by Styx.

Memory Prompt - First Five: Field of Corn October 19

FirstFive-Friday

There are lots of memories inside our minds - sometimes we just need a little nudge to coax them out.

What are the First Five things that come to mind when you see this:

Screen shot 2012-09-06 at 1.47.03 PM

My List:

1. Weed and Water Duties - During the summer, between my 4th and 5th grade years, my father planted a field of corn. My brother and sister and I had to go out in the field and hoe the weeds and water the corn all summer. (This was a new experience for three kids who had previously lived in the city. We didn't like it.)

2. Sweet Corn? - When our corn was grown my Dad put a sign up at the end of our driveway to let people know the corn was for sale. One day, when my parents weren't home, a man came to buy some corn. I did my best to help him, but, he asked me a question - "Is it sweet corn?" I think I told him "no" because it wasn't sweet to me. (I had no idea that there was different corn - sweet corn (sold for people) and field corn (grown for animal feed.)

3. Children of the Corn - When I was a kid I loved to watch scary movies. The movie "Children of the Corn" cured me of any desire to watch another scary movie.

4. Corn Field Maze - A few years ago Kevin and I took our children on a field trip to a dairy. They had a maze cut out of the corn field; so, we walked through the maze.

5. Corn Husks - I love that the grocery stores put big boxes next to the corn so we can shuck the corn before we buy it. (Less mess to bring home!)

What were the first five "sweet corn" thoughts that came to your mind? Add your list to our comments to be entered in our snapncrop.com drawing. Aren't sure how to leave a comment/List? Click here for the details.

Happiness is... this week - Thursday, October 18

New-LIL-THURS

What made me happy this week:

1. Seeing a great music artist (Lee Greenwood) sing LIVE!

Lee Greenwood

photo taken in Chesapeake VA Oct 17, 2012

2. He sang several songs I hadn't heard before. (I very rarely listen to the radio.) I liked them.

3. He sang my all time favorite patriotic song: "God Bless the USA."

4. He also played his saxophone.

Lee greenwood sax

5. He sang the "pledge of allegiance" - it was wonderful. He also sang the Star Spangled Banner.
6. The weather was beautiful (a big deal - especially when you are standing outside for hours.)

Oh my word "Superstition" - Wednesday, October 17

LIL-oh-my-word-WED

There are lots of memories inside our minds - sometimes we just need a little nudge to coax them out.

What are the first things that come to mind when you READ this:

Superstition

My List:

1. Friday the 13th - Having been born on the 13th, the whole "13" superstition thing seems null and void for me. :)

2. Blacks Cats - I had a cute one when I was little. It had white "mittens" so may be that doesn't count.

3. I don't believe that people or things can be "bad luck."  (I do believe in karma.)

4. When I was at a sleep over in grade school a friend told us all about this "bloody mary curse." It was related to looking in a mirror, in the dark, and repeating the words "I believe in bloody mary". I don't actually know who bloody mary is, but, I was freaked out by mirrors in dark rooms for years after that.

CraZy RandOm Life - Preparing for the Holidays- Tuesday Oct 16

LIL-crazy-Tuesday

One "Home Made Holiday" coming up!

I've been looking at projects and pinning them on my pinterest boards to prepare for the coming holidays. I have been making progress toward my goal. Recently I:

1. Made a Halloween Wreath from orange burlap.

Wreath

2. Started on a Countdown to Christmas board.

Clothes pins
First I painted the clothes pins red or white.

Countdown board in progress
Then I covered the front of each clothes pin with cute Christmas paper from my scrapbook stash. (I cut the paper strips on my Mosaic Moments Mat - 3/8 inch wide - a perfect fit.)

(I still need to cut the title - "Counting Down to Christmas Day," and glue everything to the 3 ft board that I painted white about a week ago. Then the "real" work begins - making all the countdown surprises!)

3. Made wax dipped pine-cones - pretty fire starters that you can sit in a pretty basket next to the fireplace. (A Christmas gift for a friend.)

Firestarter pincone

Mosaic Moments Scrapbooking - Notch Cuts

Cut A Notch

MoMA wb

6 photos used

Today I decided I was finally going to make a page with those photos I took back in 2010 at the MoMA in New York City. When I started laying out my page design I decided I wanted to create a mosaic using the "city view" image I had taken from our hotel room.
I wanted to use two 3.25 inch wide photos under the city scape; however, I also wanted the title to be the same width as the city scape image. My decision to locate the title right under the mosaic cut city scape gave me a reason to do a bit of "fancy" cutting.
.
Notice the 3.25 inch wide photos on the left and right of the page each have a square "notch" cut out of them to accomodate the title. (I have wanted to try this for awhile and it was easier than I expected using the Mosaic Moments Cutting Mat.) I simply ligned up the photo with the grid on the mat, cropped it to a 3.25 x 5.5 inch piece to fit the grid paper. Then I cut a 1.125 (1 1/8) inch square out of the top corners as shown above.
Example - the "soup can" image has a notch cut from the top left corner like this:
Notch-cut

.
"MoMA" by Tami Potter, was created on Mosaic Moments™ 12x12 Pewter Grid Paper.

Challenge: Create a 12x12 Mosaic Moments Page and try cutting a notch. Post your pages on Journella.com or your blog.

Childhood Memories, Riding in the Car - Sunday October 14

Update-LIL-SUN

Riding In the Car:

Things I remember about riding in the car as a kid:

1. We never wore seat belts.

2. As the youngest I was always stuck in the middle - between my brother and sister who got the window seats.

3. There seemed to always be a "stay out of my space" fight- the words "Don't touch me!" came up a lot.

4. I remember being tricked by my siblings with word games - one went like this: I saw a skunk on the side of the road and I one it. The next person said, "I two it"... the next said, "I three it"... The point was not be the one who said "I eight it." But, somehow I always ended up getting "eight"  AND, I wasn't as clever as my brother who, when it came his turn to say eight said, "I jumped over it and YOU ate it!"

5. Sometimes my parents would let me sit in the front seat between them. (It was a nice to be small and to get in the front when my brother and sister were fighting.)

6. When more adults were in the car (like my much older married siblings) the youngest kids had to ride in the "way back." There were no seats in the way back - just a flat space for us to share.

Memory Prompt - First Five: Chili October 12

FirstFive-Friday

What are the First Five things that come to mind when you see this:

Screen shot 2012-09-06 at 1.39.36 PM

My List:

1. Fall Chilli Cook-offs. I've been to a few and I've enjoyed the Chilli - though I've never actually made chilli for a cook off.

2. When I was a kid I felt like I saw a million old westerns (they were on TV every Saturday) and there seemed to always be a guy named "Cookie" who made chilli.

3. My favorite Chilli (which I can't buy now that I live on the east coast) is Nally brand Chilli.

4. My Sister-in-law used to always have the canned Nally chilli in her pantry. It was the dish I most frequently served to her kids when I was baby sitting.

5. When we are traveling (especially on long road trips) I am grateful to have the option of Wendy's - where I can get a cup of chilli and a baked potato or a salad (instead of something fried in grease).

Oh my word "Prank" - Wednesday, October 10

LIL-oh-my-word-WED

There are lots of memories inside our minds - sometimes we just need a little nudge to coax them out.

What are the first things that come to mind when you READ this:

Prank

My List:

1. Two of our friends are football team competitors. One cheers for the Cowboys the other is for the Redskins. Once, while "cowboy fan" was away on vacation "redskins fan" got access to his house. He smothered the place (inside and out) with redskin team decor and watched for the reaction when "cowboy fan" returned home. (I am not a big pro football fan; however, I have to say, these two make watching the Cowboys vs the Redskins each year a fun event!)

2. As the youngest in my family I was witness and victim to MANY pranks; but, I never was a prankster myself. (I guess it is kind of hard to pull a prank on older/smarter/more experienced siblings and get away with it.)

 3. The first Halloween after Kevin and I were married we went to a haunted house that was held at a state hospital that was once called the "Territorial Insane Asylum". (The area used was no longer being used by the hospital - it was run down and very creepy after dark.) The haunted house was a yearly (highly successful) fund raiser. Obviously it was a very popular haunted house and very effective at being scary.

As we were walking through the rooms Kevin was right behind me with his hand on my shoulder. At some point, one of the "characters" replaced Kevin without me noticing. When I turned toward Kevin but instead saw a creepy character with his creepy hand on my shoulder I just about had heart failure it startled me so much! (That has continued to be my most memorable Halloween activity ever.)

CraZy RandOm LiFe - fall photo list - Tuesday October 9

LIL-crazy-Tuesday

FALL PHOTO LIST!

When fall arrives - my very favorite season - there are certain photos I must take:

1. Colorful Leaves -  Changing leaves are at the top of the list of photos I must take.

2. Pumpkins -  I don't always make it to the pumpkin patch these days; but, I manage to find pumpkins somewhere. (Busch Gardens has become one of my favorite "Pumpkin photo spots.")

3. Apples -  When possible I love to go to an orchard where we can pick our own apples.

4. Corn -  Corn mazes/fields are great for family photos.

5. Costumes - Though I usually don't like how the photos turn out, I always snap a few shots of the kids in their Halloween costumes.

6. Sweaters - fall wouln't be complete without a few shots of the family in their favorite sweaters.

7. Kids fall art projects - (easier to snap a photo then to keep every project they do!)

8. Bike Rides - Fall is the best time to go for a ride down a scenic path.

9. Raking Leaves - once the trees have lost their leaves "raking" is a great photo op.

Childhood Memories, High School - Sunday October 7

Update-LIL-SUN

A few of the things I remember about High School:

1. I moved to a new area for high school.

2. Our school mascot was a Viking and the school colors were Orange and Blue.

3. The high school was very small. My class had well under 100 students.

4. There were not many options for electives, and they really only offered basic courses. (No fun science options like oceanography or astronomy like my previous school.)

5. On the upside, the classes were small and the teachers knew the students.

6. The best sports team was the girls volleyball team.

What are the First Five things that come to mind when you see this:

Screen shot 2012-09-06 at 1.22.39 PM

My List:

1.The first time I took my girls to the pumpkin patch I dressed them in denim overalls. (They were so cute!) They played with a pumpkin bean bag toss and climbed on bales of hay. Great fun - good memory.

2. It just isn't fall without that old favorite -  "It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown."

3. I've tried to grow my own pumpkins - so far I've had no luck but I will try again!

4. In 5th grade I entered a pumpkin carving contest (pretty much every kid in the 5th grade did it.) I was so excited until I got to school and saw the other kids with their "parent-help" carved pumpkins. Mine didn't look so good after all.

5. When my oldest daughter was little I called her pumpkin pie.

Happiness is... this week - Thursday, October 4

New-LIL-THURS

I read this:

Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony. - Mahatma Gandi

I decided something wasn't quite right - for me, something was missing. So, I revised it:

Happiness is... when what you believe, what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.

 What makes my harmony...

1. Church on Sunday.

2. Daily Family Dinners.

3. Family Prayer (and personal prayers.)

4. Golden Rules (like, if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all.)

CraZy RandOm LiFe - Tuesday, October 2

LIL-crazy-Tuesday

After years on the road I am settling in a bit - I think my life has gotten a little bit NORMAL! :)

What is "Normal" to me:

1. Kids participating in sports. (It has been really fun watching Cole participate on a soccer team this year.)

2. Meeting with HS counselors and teachers. (Freshman year for our daughter - very important stuff.)

3. Going to birthday parties (just went to a surprise birthday party last night), baby showers, & wedding receptions. (We have frequently missed these occasions.)

4. Weekend events - like fall festivals for our church and our neighborhood. (We used to miss most of these.)

5. Baking cookies. (When you "live" out of a suitcase you don't have a lot of time to bake.)

6. May be soon I'll add to my "normal list" - put the toiletries back in the cupboard. (When you are only home for a few days at time you just leave that stuff hanging in the toiletry bag.)

FYI I use this bag from LLBean - LOVE it!

Childhood Memories, Junior High School - Sunday September 30

Update-LIL-SUN

A few of the things  I remember about Junior High:

1. My Junior High School included 7th - 9th grade students.

2. Our school mascot was a Cougar Cub. (The high school mascot was a Cougar.) The school colors were maroon and gray.

3. In PE we had a section on gymnastics. (That was my favorite part of PE.) My least favorite part of PE were calisthenics and running a mile.

4. Each class was in a different room with a different teacher. In 8th grade I had a teacher who had a big mustache and looked like a lot Mr. Potato head. In 7th grade I had an english teacher named Mr. Shrek. Rumor was he came to class stoned on occasion. (He didn't return as a teacher the next year.)

5. We had a lot of school assemblies mostly before home games to promote school spirit.

6. They lumped art into a quarterly elective series that also included wood-shop and home economics. I was lucky to get Art the first quarter. After Art was over I transferred to choir.

7. The 7th grade choir students got to go on a "tour" to local grade schools. We sang for the students. (It was the choir teachers way of recruiting future choir members.)

My List:

1. Down the street from my home there is a house with a large Sugar Maple tree. I love to drive/walk by that tree in the fall after the leaves begin to change - the colors are gorgeous!

2. One of my favorite fall activities is a long scenic drive through the mountains on the western side of our state when all the leaves are changing color.

3. The song "True Colors." They play it every autumn on the radio (frequently) around here.

4. The 70's - the green, yellow, and orange in the leaves were the colors of my childhood.

5. Calendar Images - when I was a kid I would look at the beautiful photos of New England in the fall and wish I could live there.

Happiness is... this week - Thursday, September 27

New-LIL-THURS

What made me happy this week:

1. Being really mad at Kevin because he didn't answer his phone all day (stupid vibrate mode) while he was driving to Cincinnati - (I was happy that he finally called and I could be mad at him instead of worried!)

2. Getting a start on Halloween (Reading our favorite Halloween story - Room on the Broom)

3. Planning a "homemade" Christmas - (Thank you pinterest!) I've got so many projects to do!

Oh my word "Fiddle" - Wednesday, September 26

LIL-oh-my-word-WED

There are lots of memories inside our minds - sometimes we just need a little nudge to coax them out.

What are the first things that come to mind when you READ this:

Fiddle

I don't play the fiddle but I do a lot of fiddling.

I fiddle when I...

1. Scrapbook (deciding which pictures, which paper, which embellishments, etc.)

2. Organize (does it work here? or is it better there? fold the towels or roll the towels?)

3. Cook (more cheese, more cinnamon, apple sauce instead of oil - recipes were meant to be fiddled with!)

4. Photograph (shutter speed, aperture, flash, no flash...)

What "fiddle" thoughts came to your mind? Add your list to our comments to be entered in our snapncrop.com drawing. Aren't sure how to leave a comment/List? Click here for the details.

CraZy RandOm Life - Tuesday, September 25

LIL-crazy-Tuesday

Sometimes I don't like making decisions. It can be tough being that person who says, "the buck stops here." It's great when a decision turns out to be a good one; however, I know that all too often, things do not turn out the way we hoped they would. Thankfully we have those "little voices" that lead us in the right direction when we pause to listen.

Decisions I've had to make this week (some were easy - some were not):

1. Looking over next years conventions and deciding which ones we will/will not be attending. (not easy)

2. What to get my daughter for her birthday. (always seems fun - but...)

3. What to make for dinner? (why does this inconsequential decision always seem so hard?)

4. Which papers to order - if only we could have them all! :)

5. Which week to sign up to bring the soccer team snacks.

What decisions have you been making lately? Add your list to our comments to be entered in our snapncrop.com drawing. Aren't sure how to leave a comment/List? Click here for the details.

Mosaic Moments Scrapbooking - Photo Titles

Photograph your next Page Title

Aquatica 2009 wb
7 photos used

I like to use photos as my page titles (see Aquatica sign photo upper left corner of page.) I figure why not let the photos do the explaining when possible. To draw attention to the "title photo" I gave it a high contrast mat (white) to help it stand out from the other images on the page. I also used white for the date to "link" the two (title image and date) together.

"Aquatica" by Tami Potter, was created on Mosaic Moments™ Bahama Blue Grid Paper.  Additional supplies: PaperTiles: White and Grape Delight, and a white Four Square Year 2009 CornerStone.
All supplies are available on snapncrop.com.

Challenge: Create a 12x12 Mosaic Moments page using a sign photo as your page title. Post your pages on Journella.com or your blog.

Childhood Memories, Fifth Grade - Sunday September 23

Update-LIL-SUN

What I remember about 5th grade:

1. I had a male homeroom teacher for the first time in fifth grade.

2. I liked Mr. Morton he was nice to the students and made learning fun.

3. I was a good speller in 5th grade and got 100% on my spelling test almost every week. (Sadly that doesn't apply now - I've become dependant on spell check!)

4. We went on a field trip to the Seattle Aquarium. I loved it! My love for animals expanded to include a love for sea life.

5. In October we had a pumpkin carving contest and we were asked to bring a knife with our pumpkin to school (wow, how things have changed!)

6. In the spring we played baseball. All the 5th grade classes were divided up into teams of 9. I was terrible but my brother practiced with me and I got much better.

7. Mr. Morton was at the forefront of the "green" movement - teaching his students to recycle, save water, plant trees...
