Problem: You want to capture a photo of your wonderful husband (friend, sister, child...) sitting in front of a beautiful landscape; but, the light meter in your camera is making their face too dark (image left.) When you try to adjust the lighting on your subject, using the meter, the exposure is increased and background/sky is washed out.
Solution: Use your flash to fill in those dark shadows. (image right)
Notice - in the photo on right, the mountains and sky are not washed out from over exposure; however, Kevin's face is lighter.
